The Future of Search: Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)

TL;DR

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is how brands get seen and described accurately inside AI-generated answers. It shares most of its foundations with SEO. The difference is the prize: not the click, but a place in the answer. Good GEO comes from useful content, clear positioning, solid technical SEO, and authority that reaches beyond your own website.

Search is Changing. Is Your Brand Keeping Up?

For years, every brand has chased the same prize: a spot near the top of Google. That prize still matters. However, it isn't the whole game anymore.

People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews to research products, compare businesses, and make sense of complicated subjects. They don't type three keywords and open ten tabs. Instead, they ask a detailed question and receive one synthesised answer.

Which means marketers have a new acronym to learn. Sorry about that! It's called generative engine optimisation, or GEO.

Google's guidance on AI features says that established SEO practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to be considered as a supporting link. There is no special AI schema to add, and meeting these requirements does not guarantee inclusion.

So, what does GEO actually mean for your brand?

What is Generative Engine Optimisation?

Generative engine optimisation is the work of making your brand, business, or content show up more often and more accurately in AI-generated answers.

Traditional SEO asks one question:

"How do we rank for this search?"

GEO adds a second:

"How do we become part of the answer?"

An AI assistant can answer someone's question without sending them to your website. For brands, it is worth checking both whether they appear and whether the answer describes their services accurately. Neither a mention nor a citation proves that it generated a visit or an enquiry.

GEO vs SEO: What's the Difference?

The difference is less than some people would like you to believe. SEO helps search engines understand, trust, and rank your website. GEO helps AI systems find, understand, and reference your brand.

The foundations overlap almost entirely:

  • Clear, useful content

  • Technical accessibility

  • Topical authority

  • Credible backlinks and mentions

  • Consistent information everywhere you appear

  • Strong brand signals

We wouldn't drop SEO for GEO. For Google Search, the practical starting point remains useful content, crawlable pages and relevant internal links. Other AI services have their own systems, so avoid treating one platform's guidance as a universal ranking formula.

Why Does GEO Matter for Brands?

Imagine someone asks an AI assistant:

"Which creative agencies specialise in international campaign localisation?"

Or:

"Which London agencies have experience marketing hospitality brands?"

Make it easy to check what your business does and what supports its claims. Connect relevant service pages with case studies and useful explanations. Internal links connect pages on your own website; backlinks come from other websites. Both should help readers find relevant evidence, not simply repeat keywords.

How Can Brands Improve Their GEO?

1. Start with Clarity

Your website should make it obvious what you do, who you do it for, where you operate, and what backs those claims up.

2. Build Depth

One thin article on hotel marketing proves very little. A connected set covering hotel branding, website design, AI discovery, localisation, and guest experience paints a much clearer picture of expertise.

3. Add Unique Insights

What only you can say matters. Case studies, expert commentary, your own data, frameworks, and first-hand observations give other websites and AI systems something distinctive to point to.

4. Look Beyond Your Own Site

Check how your business is described beyond its own website, including relevant industry publications, partner pages and directories. Keep factual information consistent and seek coverage based on genuine expertise or work. Buying links or manufacturing reviews is not a credible route to visibility.

Does Traditional SEO Still Matter?

Yes, absolutely! People haven't stopped Googling. AI search has widened the discovery landscape, not wiped out what was already there. Strong technical SEO, useful content, links, clear site architecture, and good user experience still do the heavy lifting.

The opportunity lies in thinking wider. Don't optimise for a keyword alone. Build enough clarity and authority that search engines, AI systems, and, most importantly, actual humans understand why your brand deserves attention.

How should you measure GEO?

Google includes traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console's Web performance data. Track those results alongside website enquiries and qualified leads. Record separate, dated observations of AI mentions, including the query, platform and country. A mention is not a visit, and a visit is not a sale.

FAQs

Can You Guarantee ChatGPT Will Recommend a Brand?

No. No credible agency should promise a guaranteed spot inside an AI-generated answer. Brands can strengthen the signals that shape their visibility, but nobody controls every generated response.

Is GEO Replacing SEO?

No. GEO builds on established SEO principles and accounts for the growing role of AI-generated answers on top of them.

What Does GEO Stand For?

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. You'll also see AEO, LLMO, and AI search optimisation used to describe similar work.
